The Jacob H. Roth Memorial Fund

jacob.jpgThe Jacob H. Roth Memorial Fund was established by the Jewish Academy along with his family in October of 2015 in order to honor the life of the five-year old Jewish Academy student who died much too soon.

Jacob Harrison Roth o.b.m was a beautiful boy who brought joy to all who met him. He was just starting first grade at the Jewish Academy, the school he loved dearly as it quenched his great desire to learn anything and everything. His parents took him to the emergency room with stomach pain. Twenty-four hours later he went into heart failure, as an intense viral cardiomyopathy was discovered with too little time to save him.

Jacob grew up at the Suffolk Y JCC campus, the current home of The Jewish Academy. From a few weeks after birth, Jacob accompanied his big sister to preschool and then had his turn attending preschool and camp and later Kidsplace for after-school care. When The Jewish Academy moved to the campus, he was also a frequent visitor to the JA office and halls. He felt comfortable in those halls because it was a home away from home. In 2014, he joined The JA for kindergarten and blossomed. He enjoyed learning about Judaism and reading Hebrew as much as he enjoyed counting numbers in math and hands-on discovery in science. Jacob was best known by his fellow students for his high-fives and enthusiasm for soccer in gym. Jacob was learning to care for others. While home sick on September 18, 2015, Jacob was concerned that if he didn’t turn in his homework, his classmates would not earn their link on the class reward chain.

The Jacob H. Roth Memorial Fund will serve three primary goals: (1) the establishment of The Jacob Harrison Roth Opportunity for Excellence Scholarship – an annual need-blind scholarship to The Jewish Academy (2) The reconstruction of the Suffolk Y JCC playground benefittng both the Jewish Academy and Suffolk Y JCC students and (3) an annual donation to a yet unnamed charity with hopes of preventing Sudden Cardiac Death in young children like Jacob.
